BIO BA, Film + Video Production, Brooks Institute of Photography, Santa Barbara, CA, 2005. Alanna photographs herself. Her images are cathartic responses to ideas, relationships and emotionally charged situations. Currently she is in the process of developing new work dealing with endurance, tension and sexuality by performing for a motion picture camera. Her photo series, Cringe, recreates moments of intense self-criticism, disgust and shame in intimate self-portraits. Everything I can do you can do better recreates iconic and personally significant images of her art-heroes-- the likes of Bruce Nauman, David Bowie, Wolfgang Tillmans and Klaus Nomi. As C + A Projects, Alanna works in collaboration with Carolyn Radlo in both video and photography. The pair deal with social and political situations communicated through sparse text and evocative imagery. They like to work with words, images, and meaning without necessarily relying on narrative or linearity. Many of their projects focus on the exchange of ideas between them, the differences and similarities that show up in their work made side by side, but always guided and supported by chance. Their life-long, multi-faceted collaboration has evolved over the years from mother-daughter to artist-artist. Their most recent video, This Is The Place, is a meditation on the location which held the time after a death, the complicated emotions surrounding that event, and letting go. Lost off the coast of Brazil since 2008, postcards from their Conversations collaboration can now be purchased online. Other previous collaborations include creating the video elements for Seth Eisen's solo performance Blackbird, as well as a video project based on dreams with Heather Lucas, Films That My Mind Makes. In Los Angeles, Alanna performed with The People's Microphony Camerata, a project founded by Elana Mann and Juliana Snapper to explore the emergent phenomena of the People's Microphone and ideas of radical receptivity through sound, voice, and the body. She also co-founded the Los Angeles chapter of the Wanderers Union, an urban exploration society inspired to develop a deep knowledge of distance and terrain in the metropolis through organized long-distance wanders. She is a member of the Chicago chapter of the Degenderettes, a friendly international feminist and genderqueer agitpop club. For two years in San Francisco, she edited Ten Minutes to Midnight, an art blog introducing readers to new artists and exhibitions. In a former life, Simone co-founded The Harmony Project, a music program in Santa Barbara, CA teaching mediation and conflict resolution techniques to at-risk youth through composing and performing. Her earliest curatorial project was The Harbinger, an independent zine of artwork, short fiction and poetry which she self-published starting at the age of 15. Alanna has curated an extended series screening and exhibiting the work of artists using the moving image called MIA [Moving Image Art]. The program presented regular screenings at the Armory in Pasadena, CA and at Comfort Station Logan Square in Chicago, IL.
